An experienced interviewer, Dexter's particular interests in music include the work of singer/songwriters, the music of Ireland and Irish America, and the musics of the Canada and the US/Mexico borderlands, the music of Scotland, and the many musics of Texas. At any given moment you might find her CD player hosting music by Austin country maverick Kelly Willis, Boston based Scottish style fiddler and composer Hanneke Cassel, Irish American songwriter Cathie Ryan, southern folk singer Caroline Herring, Mexican American composer Tish Hinojosa, eclectic folk group Rani Arbo & daisy mayhem, or bluesman Chris Smither.
She is a contributor to the MusicHound Guides to World Music and Classical Music, The Encyclopedia of Counter Culture, The Encyclopedia of Ireland and the Americas, and other reference works. Her work has also appeared on NPR and CBC. She covers the music industry as well as the artists, and has written music industry columns, features, and opinion pieces and has been a judge for several music awards programs.
With a background as a television and radio producer, Dexter also covers other aspects of the entertainment industry, including broadcasting, music and intellectual property law, audio production, and marketing. With degrees in visual arts and history, she has written about these subjects and other performing and visual arts as well.
She has degrees in art and history from Rollins College and has done graduate work at Florida State University.
